About C.A.F.E. Practices

Formally introduced in 2004, C.A.F.E. (Coffee And Farmer Equity) Practices were designed to ensure the sustainable supply of high-quality coffee; promote social responsibility within the coffee supply chain; and protect the environment. C.A.F.E. Practices is a green coffee sourcing guideline developed in collaboration with Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), a third-party evaluation and certification firm, and Conservation International.

About the system we built

We worked with the Starbucks Corporate Social Responsibility Department and Scientific Certification Systems to create an online system to support their extensive verification system. Our work coincided with major updates to the C.A.F.E. Practices Guidelines, and the software we built supports capturing coffee supply chain descriptions, assigning supply chain components to inspectors, scoring components based on inspection results, and generating aggregate scores across complex supply chains.

The software now supports a global network of verification organizations. Inspectors that work for these organizations can download software from our site to support the use of our software when they are in the field, far from Internet access. On returnings to the office, they can upload their reports.
